COVID-19 Health Care Provider Update July 10

    July 15, 2020

This recording of a NYC Health Department webinar includes updates on multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children in NYC and resources to support older adults who live at home. Click here for a PDF of the slides.

Content on the health of older adults begins on slide 23 of the PDF and minute 24 of the webinar. This part of the webinar covers information and resources that clinicians can use to counsel older adult patients on:

    • Preventing infection with SARS-CoV-2
    • Preparing for COVID-19 disease and other emergencies
    • Staying well and keeping up with routine appointments and preventive care

Adults aged 50 years and older are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19, with those 65 and older at the highest risk. Although people 65 years and older make up 14.8% of New York City’s population, as of July 5, 2020, they represented:

    • 24% COVID-19 cases
    • 50% of COVID-19 hospitalizations
    • 74% of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 deaths

Some older patients may be experiencing financial problems, including food insecurity. The slides offer resources that address these social determinants of health.
